Don’t pay for a program that doesn’t work! The two most popular brands of antivirus do little to offer protection and often degrade system performance greatly. Why would you pay for this and the yearly subscription? Pay nothing and protect yourself better!

Housecall by Trend Micro is good for a PC that is already in trouble. This online virus scan will often pull a PC out of the bad place. Scans for all types of malicious software and will often get you mostly back to running well. Additional work is usually needed as well but this is a good start for a terribly infected computer.

AVG is my favorite antivirus tool. They always offer a free version that is comprehensive and will keep your computer pretty clean of viruses. NO PRODUCT WILL PROTECT WINDOWS COMPLETELY!!! AVG works better than most. Features include daily scheduling of updates to the program and automatic daily virus scan.

Avast! is another excellent choice for antivirus. It rivals AVG as one of the best antivirus products available at any price. Like AVG it is free and offers the same features. AVG is just a little easier to use. You may prefer the Avast! interface. It is more about personal choice than which is technically better.

Spyware Doctor Starter Edition is a full featured spyware removal tool that works in the background to protect your PC. As with all programs of this type, keep the program up to date and run a manual scan as part of your regular maintenance!

Ad-Aware is another tried and true spyware removal tool. Of course none of them work completely. If you are using a PC running Windows you will need multiple levels of protection. Ad-Aware compliments the other programs on this page nicely. Still, be vigilant about maintenance and you will have less problems!

Malwarebytes is great for removing Antivirus 2009 among other things. Add this to your PC as yet another way to help protect it. Remember, Windows has innumerable security holes. Get all the protection you can but be aware that not all programs that claim to help are capable of doing so. Some are harmful, such as Antivirus 2009. This is one of the good ones.
